noopener\">Sukhoi Su-25 (NATO reporting name: Frogfoot)<\/a>&nbsp;was Russia\u2019s answer to the US&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/a-10-pilot-tells-the-story-of-when-he-oversped-the-warthog-and-he-explains-why-the-a-10-can-shrug-off-just-about-anything-including-going-too-fast\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A-10 Warthog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Su-25 was the Soviet Air Force\u2019s first mass-produced jet purposely designed for the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/10-vs-f-35-close-air-support-flyoff-competition-hog-jsf-start-2018\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">close air support (CAS)<\/a>&nbsp;role and was a simple, effective and durable attack aircraft that, by 2021,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/that-time-a-russian-su-25-attack-aircraft-nearly-collided-with-a-usaf-f-22-stealth-fighter-and-the-other-close-calls-between-russian-and-nato-aircraft-over-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">had seen combat<\/a>&nbsp;in no fewer than 40 conflicts. Really, when you are taking heavy fire you want your close air support ASAP. The Su-25 has few advantages in this case: it has 34% higher cruise speed, it can use any fuel available (like diesel), it can take off from literally any surface:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-zoooom\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Su-25-Frogfoot.jpg\" alt=\"Su-25 Vs A-10: here\u2019s why the Frogfoot might be better suited than the Warthog for CAS\" class=\"wp-image-50443\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018This means the Su-25 can be located closer to frontline and it can reach it much faster. This is real \u201cclose air support\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Yes, the A-10 has significantly bigger range and fly time. It also can be refueled in flight. But when you are bombing Middle Age army down to the Stone age this is not really important. Things does change in the real conflict: bringing tankers to the front line is a suicide, patrolling the front line is making you easy to detect and easy to intercept (especially with 560km\/h cruise speed). Also, advantage in speed and closeness to frontline allow the Su-25 to make more sorties in the same period of time. More sorties = more bombs dropped on the heads of evil guys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018<strong>The gun<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018The most&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/a-10-pilot-tells-how-many-bullets-the-warthogs-gau-8-a-cannon-carries-into-battle-and-for-how-long-the-avenger-can-fire-continuously\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">successful department of GAU-8&nbsp;<\/a>developer is a marketing department. Everybody likes this gun, that photo with WW Beetle is really cool.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-zoooom\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GAU-8-VW.jpg\" alt=\"Su-25 Vs A-10: here\u2019s why the Frogfoot might be better suited than the Warthog for CAS\" class=\"wp-image-50444\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He continues;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018But what we have as facts?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018GAU-8 is overengineered, expensive and heavy gun than did not reach the goal it designed for. In Iraq A-10s destroyed most of their targets by the Mavericks. In average were spent about 124 GAU-8 shells per flight but the A-10 was carrying an astonishing 1200+ shells. It also carries used empty shells as a dead weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018The A-10 was built around the GAU-8 but suddenly it appears, that it\u2019s not that useful weapon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018On the other hand, the Su-25 has GSh-30-2 gun which is three times lighter, has 3000 RPM (it is more than enough) and has no limit to bursts lengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018<strong>Other armaments<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018List of weaponry is roughly equal, but the A-10 can carry twice the payload then the Su-25. It\u2019s a significant advantage, but if you count hardpoints and pieces of equipment on board there is much less difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image is-style-zoooom\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/theaviationgeekclub.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Su-25.jpg\" alt=\"Su-25 Vs A-10: here\u2019s why the Frogfoot might be better suited than the Warthog for CAS\" class=\"wp-image-50445\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018<strong>Protection<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018The Su-25 is smaller but is has up to 1100kg of titanium armor on board (the A-10 has \u201conly\u201d about 540kg). The Su-25 is also much faster and more maneuverable.
